Now, Father Markus must lead the battle against Azazel, a fallen angel who moves to free Beshwa from his shackles, to mate again, but this time with a Succubus, Semyaza, for a new race of Nephilim. If born, the new race will prevail over all mortals and wreak unmitigated havoc and unstoppable evil. This is Purgatory, which follows 5 characters - Taylor, Danni, Willis, Guardian Paul, and Nina - as they navigate this fresh vision of the Afterlife. They find Limbo in the state it's in because in the on-going war between Good and Evil, a disillusioned Angel in Heaven compromises the security of Heaven. After a group of fallen Angels attack, Heaven is destroyed. Archangel Raphael - protector of Heaven - makes it his personal mission to destroy Hell, which he promptly does. Heaven and Hell are now both destroyed, letting loose all the Angels, Saints, souls, Demons, hellish and heavenly creatures to run free within the middle-ground. With Purgatory being in such disarray, our 5 main characters go in search of the elusive Holy Temple, God's very own domain, but just because they are already dead doesn't mean they cannot feel pain or be killed again. He recruits four women: Elsie Knocker (British), Mairi Chisholm (Scottish), Dorothy Fielding (Canadian) and Helen Gleason (American). The women are sent to a field hospital in Furnes, Flanders. But before long, Elsie discovers that many wounded soldiers die of shock during the transport from the trenches to the hospital. She implores Dr. Munro to move the field hospital closer to the front. When he declines, the four women steal an ambulance, packed with supplies, and begin to operate their own dressing station -- in an abandoned village called Pervyse, a stone's throw away from the trenches. Pervyse is just north of the Ypres 'Salient,' a dangerous bulge in the German lines which actually exposes the Allied soldiers to German artillery from three sides. Many dramatic events intervene, and despite tremendous challenges the post survives until April of 1918, when the massive Ludendorff Offensive threatens not only the lives of the women but the imminent collapse of the Allied armies.
